October 14, 2023—China and the Commonwealth of Dominica marked the 20th anniversary of their diplomatic relations with an exchange of congratulatory messages between their leaders. The milestone highlights two decades of growing cooperation and mutual respect between the Asian powerhouse and the Caribbean nation.
Chinese President Xi Jinping emphasized the importance of Dominica as a partner in the Caribbean region. In his message, Xi stated, “China attaches great importance to the development of bilateral relations and is willing to work with Dominica to deepen cooperation in various fields. Together, we can build the Belt and Road Initiative with high quality and create an even better future for our nations.”
Dominica’s President Sylvanie Burton expressed similar sentiments, noting that the relationship between the two countries is both strong and fruitful. “Dominica cherishes its friendship with China,” Burton remarked. “We appreciate China’s support and assistance and are willing to deepen mutually beneficial cooperation to tackle global challenges together.”
The constructive dialogue extended to other high-ranking officials. Chinese Premier Li Qiang exchanged messages with Dominica’s Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit. Li conveyed China’s readiness to enhance practical cooperation across various sectors, aiming to bring more tangible benefits to both peoples.
Prime Minister Skerrit reflected on the significant advancements made since the establishment of diplomatic ties two decades ago. “Dominica and China have respected and understood each other,” he said. “China’s support and cooperation have significantly contributed to our economic and social development. I am confident that our relations will continue to strengthen and thrive.”
