This year marks the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the People’s Republic of China and the Republic of the Congo, a milestone celebrated by President Denis Sassou Nguesso during an exclusive interview in Brazzaville.
Over the past six decades, President Sassou has visited China 16 times, witnessing the remarkable transformations in both nations. He attributes the strength of the bilateral relationship to mutual respect and shared goals. “Our partnership with China has been instrumental in our development,” he stated.
In an engaging discussion with CMG’s He Yanke on the program Leaders Talk, President Sassou highlighted the significant impact of China-Africa cooperation. He refuted accusations of “neo-colonialism,” emphasizing that China’s involvement has brought developmental opportunities to millions across Africa. “China’s support has enabled us to bring electricity to those who previously lived without it,” he said, referencing the 600 million Africans who have benefited.
President Sassou expressed profound appreciation for China’s contributions, particularly the construction of the No.1 National Highway in Congo. “The changes are tangible and have improved the lives of our people,” he remarked.
He also praised Chinese leader Xi Jinping’s vision for the Global South, describing him as a visionary leader. “President Xi’s commitment to fostering cooperation and development sets an example for emerging nations,” President Sassou noted.
Looking ahead, President Sassou expressed optimism for the future of Congo-China relations and the broader impact on the African continent. “Together, we can achieve greater prosperity and stability for our peoples,” he concluded.
