Celebrating a Decade of Transformation in Northern China
Ten years have passed since the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei integrated development initiative was elevated to a national strategy. The region, known as the Jing-Jin-Ji area, has made remarkable strides toward achieving better integration and balanced development, unlocking the collective potential of its three key areas.
Launched in 2014, the strategy aimed to address regional imbalances and promote coordinated growth among Beijing, Tianjin, and Hebei Province. Over the past decade, the central government, alongside relevant departments, has consistently implemented the strategy through targeted actions and supportive policies across various sectors such as industry and education.
Flagship Projects Driving Growth
One of the flagship projects, Xiongan New Area in Hebei Province, is now entering a critical phase. Large-scale construction is advancing steadily, coupled with the relocation of non-capital functions from Beijing. The development of Xiongan is envisioned as a model city for the future, emphasizing innovation-driven growth and sustainable urban planning.
Meanwhile, Beijing’s urban sub-center in Tongzhou District is flourishing. Over 70 municipal departments and nearly 30,000 staff have relocated to the area, contributing to Tongzhou’s evolution into a vibrant urban hub. New attractions like the Universal Beijing Resort and cultural centers such as the Beijing Art Center have enhanced the district’s appeal, improving the quality of life for residents and drawing in visitors.
Economic Uplift Across the Region
Economic development across the region has shown positive signs. Tianjin Binhai New Area has witnessed robust growth, becoming a dynamic economic zone. Notably, Tianjin Port’s container throughput in 2023 exceeded 22 million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units), marking a significant increase of 58 percent compared to 2014. This surge underscores the region’s expanding connectivity and role in international trade.
An official from the National Development and Reform Commission highlighted these achievements at a press conference on Tuesday, emphasizing the consistent efforts and policies that have driven the region’s integrated development.
Looking Ahead
The progress in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region exemplifies how strategic planning and coordinated efforts can lead to significant regional transformation. As the area continues to develop, it sets a precedent for other regions aiming for integrated and sustainable growth.
