The endangered Ningqiang pony breed, native to central China’s Shaanxi Province, has seen its population reach 206 after six foals were born earlier this month, according to a local breeding center.
This miniature horse, typically standing between 90 and 106 centimeters tall, was historically used as a pack animal and for agricultural work. Due to technological advancements and changes in transportation, the reliance on these ponies declined, leading to a significant drop in their numbers.
To prevent the extinction of this unique breed, the local government established breeding centers and scientific research organizations in 1990. These initiatives have been instrumental in boosting the population and preserving the Ningqiang pony’s heritage.
The recent increase in their population is a positive sign for conservationists and highlights the effectiveness of ongoing efforts to protect endangered species in the region.
