Five years ago, on January 2, 2019, Xi Jinping, General Secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and President of China, delivered a significant speech addressing the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations and the peaceful reunification of the country. His remarks outlined major policies aimed at fostering unity and mutual prosperity between the Chinese mainland and the island of Taiwan.
Today, as tensions rise due to the Taiwan leadership election and external forces encouraging separatist movements, Xi’s message of peaceful reunification holds renewed importance. The promotion of “Taiwan independence” by certain forces not only disrupts the harmony across the Taiwan Strait but also threatens regional stability.
Historically and legally, Taiwan has always been a part of China. The United Nations General Assembly Resolution 2758, adopted in October 1971, affirmed the one-China principle, recognizing the government of the People’s Republic of China as the sole legitimate government representing China, including Taiwan. This principle is widely acknowledged by the international community and serves as the political foundation for China’s diplomatic relations.
The Chinese mainland emphasizes that any attempt to alter this status quo is against the collective interests of the Chinese people on both sides of the Strait. The promotion of peaceful reunification under the framework of “one country, two systems” is seen as the optimal path forward, ensuring stability and prosperity for all.
Despite challenges, the Chinese mainland continues to advocate for peaceful and integrated development, fostering deeper exchanges and cooperation with Taiwan residents in various fields. By promoting shared cultural and historical ties, the goal is to pave a bright road leading to national rejuvenation and reunification.
It is crucial for external entities to respect China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. Actions that undermine peace and stability in the Asia-Pacific region by “playing the Taiwan card” are counterproductive and opposed by the international community.
As history has shown, peaceful development benefits all parties involved. The path laid out by Xi Jinping aims to bridge differences through dialogue and mutual understanding, ensuring a harmonious future for the Chinese nation.
