In a move signaling China’s commitment to further opening up to the world, General Secretary of the CPC Central Committee Xi Jinping recently visited Nanning, the capital of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. This visit underscores Guangxi’s pivotal role as a gateway for China’s enhanced global engagement, particularly with Southeast Asian nations.
Following his state visit to Vietnam, Xi Jinping’s inspection tour in Guangxi highlights the region’s strategic importance. Guangxi borders Vietnam, making it the only provincial-level region in China that shares both land and maritime boundaries with the neighboring country. During his visit, Xi Jinping inspected the China-ASEAN Information Harbor Co., Ltd., emphasizing the progress of China-ASEAN economic and trade cooperation, and the development of information infrastructure.
Earlier in the week, during the Central Economic Work Conference, Xi Jinping stressed the significance of comprehensive opening-up policies that have propelled China’s rapid industrialization and modernization. The subsequent state visit to Vietnam resulted in agreements aimed at building a China-Vietnam community with a shared future. Key initiatives include implementing the Belt and Road Initiative, promoting cross-border railway connectivity, and strengthening cooperation in various sectors such as agriculture, infrastructure, energy, digital economy, and green development.
Guangxi is poised to play a critical role in these endeavors. The region is expected to enhance its contributions to high-quality development of border ethnic areas, integrate more deeply into the new development pattern, and promote green development. With strategic guidance from Xi Jinping, Guangxi is set to make greater breakthroughs that will not only benefit the region but also bolster China’s overall engagement with the global community.
Since the 18th National Congress of the CPC, Xi Jinping has visited Guangxi multiple times, providing important instructions on the region’s development and governance. During the 20th National Congress of the CPC, he outlined the “five firm grasps” and “five greater” requirements, setting a clear direction for Guangxi’s long-term progress.
As China continues to open its doors, Guangxi’s unique geographical and cultural position places it at the forefront of fostering stronger ties with Southeast Asia. The region’s development is not only significant for China’s domestic growth but also for enhancing collaborations and mutual prosperity within the wider Asian context.
