New Railway Connecting Shangri-La and Lijiang Opens in China’s Yunnan Province

On Sunday, China’s picturesque Yunnan Province witnessed a landmark event as the much-anticipated Lijiang-Shangri-La Railway commenced operations. This new line connects two of the region’s most celebrated tourist destinations, Lijiang and Shangri-La, significantly enhancing travel and economic prospects in the area.

The inaugural train departed from Shangri-La, nestled in the Diqing Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, at noon, arriving in Lijiang just one and a half hours later. Passengers continued on to the provincial capital, Kunming, reaching there in a total of 4.5 hours. The railway, designed for speeds of up to 140 kilometers per hour, spans 139 kilometers, cutting travel time between Shangri-La and Lijiang to a swift one hour and 18 minutes.

An integral part of the Yunnan-Xizang Railway, the Lijiang-Shangri-La Railway traverses some of the most breathtaking natural landscapes in southwest China. Passengers are treated to panoramic views of towering mountains, deep valleys, and pristine rivers, offering an unforgettable journey that seamlessly blends engineering prowess with the region’s unspoiled beauty.

The opening of this railway is expected to boost tourism and facilitate economic development in Yunnan Province. By improving accessibility to remote areas, it provides new opportunities for local communities and enhances the appeal of Yunnan as a destination for travelers, business professionals, and cultural enthusiasts alike.
