Andrew Field: Capturing China’s Evolution Through the Lens

For 26 years, U.S. documentary filmmaker Andrew Field has immersed himself in China, chronicling its rich history and rapid transformation. With a camera in hand and a passion for storytelling, Field has participated in the production of numerous historical documentaries, offering a unique third-person perspective on Chinese culture to a global audience.

Field’s deep understanding of China didn’t happen overnight. “Being in China allows me to truly get to know the country beyond the headlines,” he says. His work bridges cultural gaps, shedding light on the nuances of Chinese history and society that are often overlooked.

Now, as a professor at Duke Kunshan University, Field continues his mission by educating the next generation. He takes his students out of the classroom and into the bustling streets of Shanghai, encouraging them to observe and document the city’s ever-changing landscape. “Shanghai is a microcosm of China’s rapid development,” Field explains. “By engaging with the city directly, students can witness history in the making.”

Field believes that understanding China is essential in today’s interconnected world. Through his documentaries and teaching, he hopes to foster a deeper appreciation of China’s role in global affairs. His dedication not only enriches his students’ lives but also contributes to a broader international dialogue about China’s past, present, and future.
