From Wheels to Paddles: American Cyclist Peter Crosby Embraces Dragon Boat Racing in Biancheng

Over two decades ago, American cyclist and photographer Peter Crosby embarked on an epic 2,000-kilometer journey from Beijing to Hong Kong, capturing the essence of the Chinese mainland through his lens and on his bicycle. In 2021, Crosby returned to China, finding himself in the picturesque town of Biancheng, nestled along the banks of a serene river.

His arrival coincided with the vibrant Dragon Boat Festival, a time-honored tradition celebrated across China with races that see teams paddling ornate dragon boats in synchrony. Drawn by the festivity and the camaraderie of the locals, Crosby was encouraged by newfound friends to join a dragon boat team preparing for the upcoming race.

“I never imagined myself trading my bicycle for a paddle,” Crosby shared with a laugh. “But the energy here is infectious, and the opportunity to immerse myself in such a significant cultural event was too good to pass up.”

Training alongside the residents of Biancheng, Crosby delved into the physical demands and teamwork required for dragon boat racing. The experience offered him a deeper appreciation for the festival’s cultural significance and the communal spirit that defines it.

The Dragon Boat Festival, known as Duanwu Festival in China, commemorates the life and death of the ancient poet and minister Qu Yuan. It’s a time of remembrance, community bonding, and vibrant displays of tradition. For Crosby, participating in the race was not just about the competition but also about forging connections and understanding the local way of life.

“Being part of the team has been an incredible journey,” he said. “It’s reminded me of the importance of stepping outside my comfort zone and embracing new experiences.”

As the festival day arrived, Crosby and his team paddled with determination, cheered on by crowds lining the riverbanks. While the race results were secondary to the experience, the sense of accomplishment and unity was palpable.

Crosby’s adventure in Biancheng underscores the power of cultural exchange and the unexpected paths that travel can unveil. His story is a testament to the enriching experiences that await those who are open to immersing themselves in the traditions of others.
