South Africa Ramps Up FMD Fight with Record Vaccine Imports

South Africa is intensifying its battle against the worst foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) outbreak in years, securing a massive influx of vaccines to protect its livestock and economy.

Agriculture Minister John Steenhuisen announced on Sunday that the country has received the first batch of a 3.5 million-dose consignment from Argentina. This shipment, provided by manufacturer Biogénesis Bagó, represents the largest single consignment of FMD vaccines ever imported into the country.

The effort is part of an aggressive strategy to curb a widespread outbreak that began in early 2025. With several provinces affected, farmers have reported mounting economic losses, prompting the government to prioritize the rapid inoculation of as many animals as possible over the coming weeks.

By the end of May, South Africa expects to have secured a total of 13.5 million imported doses. This includes the remainder of the Argentine shipment due later this week, as well as significant contributions from Türkiye. In April, the government noted the arrival of two million doses from Turkish supplier Dollvet, with another four million ordered.

Since February, the ministry has already processed four million doses—2.5 million from Biogénesis Bagó and 1.5 million from Dollvet—adding to the two million doses imported in late 2025.

Foot-and-mouth disease is a highly infectious viral ailment affecting cattle, pigs, sheep, and goats. While rarely fatal for adult animals, it can devastate livestock production and severely disrupt meat exports.

Minister Steenhuisen emphasized the importance of a disciplined approach, stating that rapid and effective administration of the vaccines is key to ensuring that South Africa never again faces outbreaks of this magnitude. The overarching goal is to achieve "FMD-free with vaccination" status to safeguard food security, rural livelihoods, and international trade.
