Kunqu opera performer Zhao Jinyu recently showcased the garment’s enduring allure during a 2026 performance of The Peony Pavilion, her hand-painted satin qipao harmonizing with the opera’s lyrical movements like brushstrokes on silk.
Artisans here spend up to 200 hours perfecting each dress, using techniques passed through generations. “The qipao isn’t just clothing—it’s an extension of the performer’s spirit,” Zhao explained, noting how the tailored silhouette informs every gesture of her young maiden portrayal.
While maintaining traditional elements like high collars and intricate knot buttons, modern designers are experimenting with sustainable fabrics and digital pattern-making. This fusion has sparked renewed interest among younger wearers, with global fashion analysts reporting a 35% year-on-year increase in luxury qipao sales through Q4 2025.
