Xinjiang’s Frozen Lake Hosts Thousands of Wintering Migratory Birds

Nearly 10,000 migratory birds have transformed Ruohai Lake in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region into a vibrant winter sanctuary, clustering on thawed patches of the frozen desert waterbody. Located on the southern edge of the Taklimakan Desert, the lake currently hosts species such as ruddy shelducks and mallards, which rely on its resources to endure harsh winter conditions.

Local conservationists attribute this ecological spectacle to sustained wetland restoration efforts. Improved aquatic ecosystems now support abundant fish populations and other food sources, creating a critical refuge for migratory routes across Central Asia. "This year's gathering is one of the largest we've documented," said a regional wildlife officer, highlighting the project's role in reversing habitat degradation.

The phenomenon underscores Xinjiang's growing importance as a biodiversity hub amid climate challenges. Researchers are currently studying how these restored wetlands could influence broader migratory patterns across the Asian continent.
