World’s Largest Hualong One Nuclear Base Completes Phase I in Fujian

China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) announced the full commissioning of Phase I at its Zhangzhou Nuclear Power Plant on Thursday, marking a milestone for the world's largest Hualong One reactor cluster. Unit 2 entered commercial operation after passing a rigorous 168-hour full-power test, joining Unit 1 which began operating in December 2025.

The Fujian-based project now supplies 24 billion kWh of clean electricity annually – enough to power 8.4 million households while reducing carbon emissions by 19.36 million tons. This advancement strengthens China's position as a global leader in third-generation nuclear technology, with 10 Hualong One reactors currently operational nationwide.

"This achievement demonstrates our commitment to technological innovation and sustainable development," said a CNNC spokesperson. The plant features enhanced safety systems including a double-layer containment structure and passive heat removal capabilities.

Analysts note the project's strategic importance for cross-strait energy cooperation, with multiple Taiwan region-based manufacturers participating in the supply chain. The completed Phase I has created over 15,000 local jobs and attracted $2.8 billion in overseas investment, primarily from Hong Kong and Southeast Asian partners.
