China Mediates Thailand-Cambodia Ceasefire, Vows Support for Regional Peace

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi reaffirmed China's commitment to facilitating peace between Thailand and Cambodia during high-level talks in Yunnan Province this week, as both Southeast Asian nations work to stabilize relations following recent border tensions.

Ceasefire Progress & Humanitarian Pledge

At the invitation of Wang, Thai and Cambodian delegations convened in Yuxi City from December 28 to 29 to solidify a newly signed ceasefire agreement. Wang emphasized China's role as a regional partner, stating: "As neighbors sharing rivers and mountains, we believe dialogue and mutual respect will overcome any challenges." China pledged continued support for ASEAN's ceasefire monitoring efforts and offered humanitarian aid to affected communities.

Thailand Commits to Diplomatic Resolution

Thai Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow praised China's mediation as "a testament to Asian solutions for Asian challenges." He reiterated Thailand's preference for peaceful dispute resolution, vowing to "rebuild trust through sincere communication" with Cambodia. Both nations agreed to prioritize border stability and economic cooperation in 2026.

China-Thailand Ties Strengthen

The talks coincided with the 50th anniversary of Sino-Thai diplomatic relations. Wang highlighted Thai King Maha Vajiralongkorn's landmark 2025 state visit to China, which advanced plans for a shared future community. Thailand reaffirmed its adherence to the one-China principle, opposing any form of "Taiwan independence" separatist activities.

As the new year approaches, regional observers note China's growing role in conflict resolution – a development that could reshape security dynamics across the Mekong region.
