Hainan Free Trade Port Advances Carbon Capture Tech, Boosts Green Economy

Hainan Free Trade Port has marked a pivotal achievement in sustainable development with the successful operation of its carbon capture and liquefaction facility in Chengmai. Operated by China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC), the project represents a critical leap in China's green industrialization efforts as of December 2025.

The facility, now running smoothly, captures and processes over 100 tonnes of liquid carbon dioxide daily from oilfield emissions. This breakthrough supports Hainan's ambition to become a global ecological civilization pilot zone while balancing energy needs. CNPC reports that pilot experiments have already stored 360,000 tonnes of CO₂ and boosted hydrocarbon production by 150,000 tonnes – equivalent to neutralizing annual emissions from 150,000 vehicles.

Experts highlight the dual benefit: "This CCUS model transforms waste gas into industrial assets while securing energy output," said a CNPC technical advisor. The project employs real-time monitoring systems to ensure stable long-term carbon storage, providing a blueprint for low-carbon energy systems across Asia's developing economies.

With the facility's success, Hainan FTP is now exploring advanced carbon storage solutions to meet its 2025 ecological targets. The progress positions the island as a testing ground for climate technologies crucial to Asia's net-zero transition.
