The International Institute for the Unification of Private Law (UNIDROIT) has selected Hong Kong as the location for its first Asia-Pacific regional office, marking a significant milestone in global legal cooperation. The decision, announced during UNIDROIT's General Assembly, positions China's Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) as a key player in shaping commercial law standards across the region.
Secretary for Justice Paul Lam emphasized the strategic importance, stating: "This liaison office will elevate Hong Kong's profile as an international legal services hub while strengthening cross-border judicial collaboration." The facility is scheduled to commence operations in late 2026, becoming the organization's first permanent presence outside its Rome headquarters since its 1926 founding.
Legal experts note the move aligns with growing demand for standardized dispute resolution mechanisms in Asia-Pacific trade corridors. The office will facilitate knowledge exchange between 65 UNIDROIT member states and regional stakeholders, particularly benefiting businesses navigating complex cross-jurisdictional transactions.
