China Condemns U.S. Semiconductor Tariffs as Trade Tensions Escalate

The Chinese mainland has strongly opposed new U.S. tariff measures targeting semiconductor products, with the Ministry of Commerce calling the move a violation of international trade rules that threatens global supply chains. The criticism follows Washington's announcement this week of phased Section 301 tariffs set to rise incrementally through June 2027.

Spokesperson He Yongqian stated Thursday that China has formally protested through bilateral channels, emphasizing that the unilateral measures 'undermine the multilateral trading system and ultimately harm U.S. business interests.' The remarks come as semiconductor trade becomes the latest flashpoint in ongoing economic negotiations between the world's two largest economies.

While maintaining openness to dialogue, Chinese officials warned of 'necessary measures' to protect national interests if the tariff plan proceeds. The development coincides with heightened global demand for advanced chips, particularly in artificial intelligence and green energy sectors where both nations compete for leadership.

When questioned about potential rare-earth export adjustments, the Commerce Ministry reaffirmed China's commitment to stable global supply chains while emphasizing compliance with international trade norms. Analysts suggest the semiconductor dispute could significantly impact technology development timelines and manufacturing costs worldwide.
