Nanjing’s Qinhuai Lantern Festival Kicks Off 40th Edition with Dazzling Display

Nanjing prepares to illuminate its historic waterways as the 40th Qinhuai Lantern Festival opens tomorrow at Bailuzhou Park, blending centuries-old traditions with modern spectacle. Recognized as a national intangible cultural heritage event, this year's edition marks a significant expansion in both scale and cultural representation.

Visitors will encounter an unprecedented collection of lantern artistry from across China, including Foshan's vibrant colored lanterns and Suzhou's intricate silk designs. Seven themed zones will guide attendees through over 40 installations that reinterpret the Year of the Horse through contemporary lighting technology while preserving traditional craftsmanship.

"This year's festival represents our most ambitious fusion of regional styles yet," explained a cultural affairs coordinator. "By bringing together masters from different lantern-making schools, we're creating a living museum of Chinese folk art under the night sky."

The exhibition will remain open through May 2026, offering extended opportunities for cultural tourism along the Qinhuai River. Enhanced visitor pathways and interactive elements aim to position the festival as both a heritage preservation project and a driver for winter tourism in Jiangsu Province.
