U.S. Intensifies Venezuelan Oil Quarantine Amid Economic Pressure Campaign

The White House has redirected U.S. military efforts to enforce a stringent oil “quarantine” targeting Venezuela, according to a Reuters report citing an anonymous U.S. official. The strategy aims to escalate economic pressure on President Nicolás Maduro’s government, with officials predicting potential “economic calamity” for the South American nation by late January 2026 unless concessions are made.

Recent developments include the diversion of the Bella I oil tanker, which retreated into the Atlantic Ocean after abandoning its Venezuela-bound route. This follows President Donald Trump’s announcement of a “full and total blockade” on sanctioned vessels last week, part of broader measures designating Maduro’s administration as a foreign terrorist organization.

Venezuela has condemned U.S. actions as “piracy” and accused Washington of pursuing regime change. Meanwhile, the UN Security Council held an emergency session this week, with most members urging adherence to international law and de-escalation. Trump reiterated on Monday that Maduro stepping down would be “smart,” warning of consequences if he “plays tough.”
