UN Security Council Urges Restraint in Venezuela Tensions

Global powers clashed at a UN Security Council emergency session on Tuesday as tensions over Venezuela's sovereignty reached a boiling point. The December 23 meeting saw multiple members condemn unilateral actions threatening regional stability, with Russia and China joining Venezuela in criticizing recent U.S. military maneuvers.

Venezuelan Ambassador Samuel Moncada Acosta accused Washington of reviving "21st-century imperialism" through its National Security Strategy, stating: "The ambition is continental. The U.S. government has made clear it considers the future of this hemisphere its exclusive domain."

Russian envoy Vassily Nebenzia denounced the "illegal naval blockade" involving seized oil tankers as violations of multiple international agreements. "These actions send a clear message to all sovereign states: comply with U.S. interests or face consequences," he warned.

Chinese Deputy Permanent Representative Sun Lei emphasized Venezuela's right to self-determination, stating: "No country should impose its will through coercion. We oppose all acts of bullying that violate the UN Charter's fundamental principles."

The emergency session concluded with broad support for diplomatic solutions, though no formal resolution was adopted. Observers note the debate reflects growing international concern over escalating great power competition in Latin America.
