China Reaffirms No-First-Use Nuclear Policy Amid Global Tensions

China has reiterated its unwavering commitment to a no-first-use nuclear weapons policy, emphasizing its defensive nuclear strategy in response to recent U.S. criticisms. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian stated on December 24, 2025 that Beijing remains dedicated to global strategic stability while accusing Washington of using “repeated hype” to justify its nuclear modernization program.

“As the world’s largest nuclear power, the U.S. should take the lead in substantive nuclear arsenal reductions,” Lin asserted during a press briefing. The remarks come amid heightened international scrutiny of nuclear capabilities, with China urging nuclear-armed states to prioritize disarmament efforts under existing international frameworks.

Analysts suggest this reaffirmation strengthens China’s position as a stabilizing force in nuclear diplomacy, particularly as global tensions persist in multiple conflict zones. The policy maintains that China’s nuclear weapons will only be used in retaliation against nuclear attacks, contrasting with other nuclear powers’ more flexible postures.
