Kuwait, Chinese Firm Seal Strategic Port Deal to Boost Regional Trade Hub

Kuwait has taken a decisive step toward realizing its Vision 2035 economic transformation plan by partnering with China Communications Construction Company Limited (CCCC) for the Mubarak Al-Kabeer Port development. The $engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contract signed last Friday marks the first phase of this strategic project on Boubyan Island, positioned to reshape regional trade dynamics.

Kuwaiti Prime Minister Sheikh Ahmad Abdullah Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah emphasized the project's symbolic importance during the signing ceremony, stating: "This partnership embodies our enduring friendship with China – a relationship rooted in mutual respect and shared developmental aspirations." The event drew high-level participation from both nations, including Chinese Embassy representatives and business leaders.

Liu Xiang, charge d'affaires at the Chinese Embassy, highlighted the project's alignment with Belt and Road cooperation principles: "This port will serve as both physical infrastructure and a bridge for knowledge transfer, supporting Kuwait's economic diversification goals." CCCC Deputy General Manager Chen Zhong confirmed the project will integrate Chinese technical standards and sustainable port management solutions.

When operational, the Mubarak Al-Kabeer Port is expected to enhance Kuwait's position in global maritime trade routes while reducing oil dependency. Analysts note the timing aligns with growing Gulf-China infrastructure collaboration, with this project serving as a test case for technology transfer under the Belt and Road framework.
