China has intensified diplomatic efforts to address Sudan's escalating conflict, with Deputy UN Representative Sun Lei urging warring parties to halt hostilities immediately and prioritize a political settlement. Speaking at a UN Security Council meeting on December 23, 2025, Sun emphasized that ending the nearly three-year conflict remains the international community's most urgent task.
The crisis has displaced millions and created what Sun described as "the world's largest humanitarian emergency," with neighboring countries facing severe spillover effects. He called for enhanced protection of civilians and UN personnel while warning against external military support to armed groups.
"China maintains an objective, impartial stance and opposes geopolitical manipulation of Sudan's affairs," Sun stated, advocating for solutions that respect Sudanese sovereignty. He highlighted Beijing's support for UN-coordinated humanitarian aid distribution and urged traditional donor nations to fulfill funding commitments.
With the conflict entering its third year in 2025, analysts note China's growing role in African peace initiatives aligns with its stated commitment to South-South cooperation. The call comes as regional organizations intensify mediation efforts ahead of Sudan's planned political transition roadmap.
