China Condemns US Vessel Seizures as Violation of International Law

China has accused the United States of breaching international law through recent maritime enforcement actions, escalating tensions in a week marked by diplomatic friction. The criticism follows the U.S. Coast Guard's seizure of an oil tanker off Venezuela's coast on December 20, 2025, which Washington claims is part of a 'shadow fleet' evading sanctions.

Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Lin Jian stated Monday that such unilateral actions 'constitute acts of unilateral bullying' and violate the UN Charter. 'China consistently opposes illegal sanctions lacking UN Security Council authorization and actions infringing on other nations' sovereignty,' Lin emphasized during a press briefing.

The remarks come as Venezuela strengthens energy partnerships with global allies. Lin affirmed that Caracas holds the right to 'independently develop mutually beneficial cooperation,' while urging the international community to respect national sovereignty in economic affairs.

This incident highlights growing concerns about maritime security and extraterritorial enforcement in strategic waterways. Analysts suggest it could impact ongoing negotiations about global shipping regulations and energy trade frameworks.
