Xi Jinping Congratulates Chile’s President-Elect José Antonio Kast

Chinese President Xi Jinping extended formal congratulations to José Antonio Kast on Monday following his victory in Chile's presidential runoff election earlier this month. Kast secured 58.16% of votes in the December 14 contest, according to official results from Chile's Electoral Service.

In his message, Xi emphasized the enduring partnership between China and Chile, stating: 'I attach great importance to the development of bilateral relations and stand ready to work with President-elect Kast to deepen mutual political trust and practical cooperation.' The president-elect is scheduled to begin his four-year term in 2026.

Analysts note this diplomatic exchange comes as Chile remains China's second-largest trading partner in Latin America, with bilateral trade exceeding $65 billion in 2025. Both nations have actively collaborated on clean energy projects and digital infrastructure development under the Belt and Road Initiative framework.

Kast's transition team has acknowledged Xi's message, expressing commitment to strengthening economic ties while addressing shared challenges in sustainable development. The election outcome is being closely monitored by international investors given Chile's status as the world's top copper producer and a key lithium supplier for green technologies.
