China Condemns U.S. Over Taiwan Arms Deal in 2026 Defense Act

China has issued a stern rebuke of the United States' inclusion of a $1 billion security cooperation package for Taiwan in its 2026 National Defense Authorization Act, calling it a dangerous provocation that undermines cross-strait stability. Chen Binhua, spokesperson for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, stated Friday that the move 'sends a gravely wrong signal to Taiwan independence separatist forces' during a press briefing in Beijing.

The proposed U.S. legislation, currently under discussion for the 2026 fiscal year, marks the largest proposed annual military allocation for Taiwan in recent years. Chen emphasized that such actions violate Washington's commitments under the one-China principle and the three China-U.S. joint communiques, which recognize Taiwan as an inalienable part of China.

'Attempts to arm Taiwan will only escalate tensions in the Taiwan Strait,' Chen warned, urging immediate cancellation of the controversial provisions. The spokesperson specifically addressed Taiwan's Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) authorities, stating that 'no amount of foreign military support can alter the historical and legal fact that Taiwan is part of China.'

Analysts note this development comes amid heightened cross-strait exchanges in 2025, with multiple Chinese cities reporting record levels of economic cooperation with Taiwan businesses. The Chinese government maintains that peaceful reunification remains the ultimate resolution to Taiwan questions, while firmly opposing any form of external interference.
