Peru’s Agricultural Exports Soar via China-Built Chancay Port

As Peru's Chinese-developed Chancay Port marks its first anniversary this December, new data reveals it has become the nation's primary gateway for agricultural exports to the Chinese mainland. The $3.6 billion deep-water facility, operational since December 2024, handled 58% of Peru's fruit and specialty crop shipments to Asia this year.

"This port has revolutionized our trade capabilities," said Peruvian Minister of Foreign Trade Claudia Cornejo during a press briefing in Lima. "Shipment times to Shanghai have been reduced by 12 days compared to traditional routes through other continents."

The port's strategic Pacific location has particularly boosted exports of Peruvian avocados, organic quinoa, and premium coffee beans. Customs data shows a 34% year-on-year increase in agricultural exports through Chancay since its opening, with December 2025 shipments projected to exceed 180,000 metric tons.

While primarily serving agricultural exports, the port is also facilitating new mining equipment imports from the Chinese mainland to support Peru's copper production expansion. Analysts note the infrastructure project has strengthened economic ties between Peru and China, with bilateral trade reaching $42 billion in the first three quarters of 2025.
