ASEAN-Led Ceasefire Gains Momentum as Cambodia-Thailand Border Tensions Escalate

Cambodia has endorsed a Malaysian-brokered ceasefire initiative amid intensifying border clashes with Thailand, as regional and global powers intensify diplomatic efforts to prevent further humanitarian crises. The proposal, announced by Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim on December 13, 2025, calls for an immediate halt to hostilities monitored by ASEAN observers with U.S. support.

Diplomatic Push Amid Escalation

Prime Minister Hun Manet confirmed Cambodia’s acceptance via social media, while Thailand’s caretaker Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul maintained defensive operations would continue until “threats are neutralized.” Malaysia’s dual role as ASEAN chair and mediator saw Anwar coordinating with U.S. President Donald Trump, who separately engaged both Southeast Asian leaders this week.

Humanitarian Toll Mounts

Cambodian authorities report Thai airstrikes targeting civilian infrastructure near Pursat Province, displacing over 303,000 people since December 7. Information Minister Neth Pheaktra condemned attacks on non-military targets, while Thailand maintains its actions respond to border provocations.

Regional Stability at Stake

The conflict marks the second major escalation this year following July’s clashes that displaced 100,000 residents. While August and October agreements temporarily eased tensions, current hostilities test ASEAN’s conflict resolution mechanisms. A Special ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting is expected to convene soon to reinforce de-escalation frameworks.
