Hong Kong Launches Independent Probe Into Tai Po Fire, Vows Impartiality

Hong Kong authorities have appointed Judge David Lok Kai-hong, chair of the Electoral Affairs Commission, to lead an independent committee investigating the cause of the recent Tai Po fire. The panel is tasked with delivering a comprehensive report within nine months, with findings expected to inform future public safety measures.

Speaking to reporters on Friday, Lok stressed the committee’s commitment to impartiality, stating, “Our priority is to conduct a thorough, evidence-based inquiry that leaves no stone unturned.” He confirmed the committee would refrain from media engagement during the investigation to avoid external influence.

The blaze, which occurred in a densely populated urban area, has raised questions about fire safety protocols and emergency response efficiency. While details remain under scrutiny, the probe aims to address community concerns and strengthen disaster preparedness frameworks across the region.
