China Urges Clarity Amid Japan’s ‘Misleading’ Claims on Regional Tensions

China has called on Japan's allies to remain vigilant against what it describes as Tokyo's attempts to distort facts and escalate regional tensions, particularly regarding sensitive cross-strait issues. The appeal came during a press briefing on December 12, 2025, following a contentious phone discussion between Japanese and U.S. defense officials about a disputed radar incident in East Asian waters.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun emphasized that Japan's recent statements about the situation lack consistency and transparency. "The facts are unequivocal," Guo stated, accusing Japanese leaders of "deliberately fabricating narratives to justify provocative actions" near the Taiwan Strait. He urged Tokyo to address the "root causes" of strained China-Japan relations rather than shifting blame.

The remarks specifically referenced Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's recent comments about the Taiwan region, which Beijing considers a violation of the one-China principle. Analysts suggest this diplomatic friction reflects broader concerns about Japan's expanding security partnerships in the Asia-Pacific, with 2025 seeing increased military coordination between Tokyo and Washington.

As regional powers navigate these tensions, China maintains that peaceful dialogue remains the preferred path forward. However, Guo warned that "external interference" in cross-strait affairs could undermine stability across the Taiwan Strait and beyond.
