China Reaffirms Stance Against Japanese Militarism on Nanjing Massacre Anniversary

China has issued a firm reminder of historical accountability as the nation commemorates the 88th anniversary of the Nanjing Massacre. At a press briefing on December 12, 2025, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun denounced attempts to whitewash wartime atrocities, stating: "The slaughter of 300,000 Chinese people forms the darkest page in human history."

The remarks came during China's annual memorial ceremony for victims of the 1937 tragedy, recognized through national legislation since 2014. Guo outlined three non-negotiable principles: preventing the resurgence of Japanese militarism, opposing foreign interference in the Taiwan region, and blocking attempts to distort historical facts.

Analysts note the timing coincides with heightened regional security discussions, particularly regarding cross-strait relations and Japan's recent defense policy adjustments. The spokesperson emphasized China's commitment to peaceful development while urging "joint efforts to maintain Asia's hard-won stability."

Memorial events this year include digital exhibitions accessible to global audiences and educational programs for youth exchanges between China and Japan. The anniversary has drawn renewed attention from international historians, with over 40 countries participating in virtual commemorations.
