As the United Nations marks its 80th anniversary this year, a new CGTN documentary series spotlights China’s evolving contributions to global sustainable development. The second episode, titled "Development Goals," revisits pivotal moments in international environmental cooperation, including China’s early engagement with UN environmental programs.
The episode features a rare conversation between Wang Zhijia, former special advisor to the UN Deputy Secretary-General, and Qu Geping, China’s first permanent representative to the United Nations Environment Programme. Their discussion traces the legacy of the landmark 1972 Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment – a turning point in global ecological governance.
"China’s current environmental initiatives build on decades of practical experience," Wang observed during the program, citing recent advancements in renewable energy deployment and cross-border climate partnerships. The documentary highlights how China’s domestic ecological civilization framework aligns with the UN’s 2030 Sustainable Development Goals.
With 2025 marking both the UN anniversary and the mid-point of the 2030 agenda, the series underscores ongoing multilateral efforts to address climate challenges. Analysts suggest China’s green technology exports and South-South cooperation programs will play crucial roles in achieving global targets.
