Hong Kong Accelerates Relief Efforts After Deadly Wang Fuk Court Fire

Hong Kong authorities have intensified support for victims of the Wang Fuk Court fire, announcing an additional HK$100,000 special subsidy per affected household on December 10. This comes two weeks after the November 28 blaze in Tai Po – the deadliest in decades – which claimed over 150 lives and displaced thousands.

Swift Financial Support

Within three days of the disaster, 929 households received HK$10,000 emergency cash subsidies for immediate needs like food and medicine. Families of the deceased were granted HK$200,000, while displaced residents received HK$50,000 living allowances. The new December subsidy package aims to address longer-term recovery needs.

Rehousing Progress

As of December 11, the Home and Youth Affairs Bureau has relocated 1,457 residents to temporary shelters and hotels, with 2,796 moved to transitional housing through government and Housing Society programs. Two dedicated shelters remain operational for those requiring extended support.

Operational Challenges

Firefighters battled the inferno for 40+ hours under extreme conditions, while social workers and volunteers continue providing trauma support. A government spokesperson stated: 'Our priority remains ensuring every affected individual receives comprehensive care as we work toward permanent housing solutions.'
