China-Ghana Ties Deepen as Nations Eye New Trade, Infrastructure Pacts

As China and Ghana celebrate 65 years of diplomatic relations, Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama highlighted accelerating economic collaboration and shared development goals in an exclusive interview with KhabarAsia. The discussion comes amid advancing negotiations for a zero-tariff trade agreement between the two nations, potentially unlocking new opportunities in agriculture, mining, and technology sectors.

Strengthening Economic Ties

President Mahama emphasized China's pivotal role in Ghana's modernization efforts, particularly through infrastructure projects like the expanded Tema Port and the Eastern Railway Line. "Our partnership transcends bricks and mortar," he noted, citing vocational training programs that have equipped over 15,000 Ghanaian workers with technical skills since 2023.

Global Governance and South-South Cooperation

The Ghanaian leader praised China's Global Governance Initiative as "a blueprint for equitable international relations," while reaffirming Africa's commitment to multilateral solutions. With bilateral trade reaching $12.6 billion in 2025 – a 9% year-on-year increase – both nations are exploring sustainable energy partnerships to support Ghana's goal of 60% renewable energy adoption by 2030.
