French President Emmanuel Macron concluded his 2025 China tour with a symbolic visit to Sichuan University on December 5, highlighting growing educational cooperation between the two nations. The leader toured research facilities and engaged with students at one of China's "Double First-Class" institutions, recognized for world-class academic programs.
This year marks a significant expansion of Franco-Chinese academic partnerships, with Sichuan University now collaborating with four major French institutions on artificial intelligence and renewable energy projects. "Our universities are building bridges for tomorrow's challenges," Macron stated during a campus address attended by 500 faculty and students.
The visit coincides with the 44th anniversary of Chengdu's sister-city relationship with Montpellier, France's first such partnership with China. University officials revealed plans to establish a joint Franco-Chinese cultural research center by late 2026, building on decades of academic exchange.
Business analysts note these educational ties complement growing economic cooperation, with French investment in Sichuan Province increasing 18% year-on-year through Q3 2025. The province's strategic position in China's Western Development Initiative continues attracting international attention.
