Russia Urges Japan to Uphold Pacifist Constitution Amid Tensions

Russia has called on Japan to adhere to its constitutional pacifist principles following recent remarks and military activities related to the Taiwan region, which Moscow claims have escalated regional instability. Speaking at a December 4-5 conference in St. Petersburg, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova emphasized that Tokyo’s actions contradict its post-war legal framework and risk undermining Asia’s security landscape.

Zakharova criticized Japan’s “abnormal statements” on the Taiwan question during a press briefing, reiterating Russia’s firm stance that Taiwan is an inseparable part of China. “The Taiwan question is purely China’s internal affair,” she stated, adding that attempts to pursue independence are “unacceptable.”

The spokesperson also expressed concern over Japan’s remilitarization efforts, urging a return to the pacifist ideals enshrined in its constitution. She warned that Tokyo’s “bellicose” policies not only heighten tensions but also distort historical truths about the post-war international order.

The remarks coincided with the international conference ‘The Great Patriotic War in the Collective Memory of CIS Nations,’ where Zakharova stressed the global responsibility to resist ideologies linked to fascism and Nazism.
