The Chinese Foreign Ministry has firmly rejected recent remarks by Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi regarding the Taiwan region, calling her position “evasive” and inconsistent with historical agreements. The diplomatic friction emerged after Takaichi referenced the 1972 Sino-Japanese Joint Statement during a December 3 parliamentary session, claiming Tokyo “understands and respects” Beijing’s position on Taiwan.
Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian clarified on Thursday that Takaichi’s interpretation misrepresented Japan’s commitments under the landmark bilateral agreement. “China’s position is clear and consistent. We urge Japan to correct its errors and withdraw these improper statements,” Lin stated, emphasizing Tokyo’s obligation to uphold the one-China principle.
The dispute centers on Japan’s perceived reluctance to explicitly reaffirm commitments made in the 1972 joint communiqué, which established diplomatic relations between the two nations. Chinese officials argue that Tokyo’s ambiguous stance undermines regional stability, particularly given increased cross-strait tensions this year.
