Fifteen years after launching its pioneering marine conservation efforts, Wuzhizhou Island in Hainan Province stands as a global model for sustainable coastal development. The tropical paradise, designated as China's first national marine ranch demonstration area in 2010, has successfully restored 18.6 hectares of coral reefs through innovative ecological engineering.
Local authorities report a 63% increase in marine biodiversity since 2020, with the island's unique 'ecology+tourism' model attracting over 1.2 million visitors this year. The project has generated 850 local jobs while maintaining strict daily visitor limits to protect fragile ecosystems.
"Our dual focus on environmental recovery and community empowerment sets a new standard for coastal management," said marine biologist Dr. Li Wei, who leads monitoring efforts. Recent underwater surveys show coral coverage reaching 41% – the highest recorded levels in three decades.
The island's success comes as Hannan accelerates its green transition, with 12 new marine protected areas planned through 2028. For residents like fisherman-turned-conservation guide Chen Yong, the transformation represents both environmental and economic hope: "The sea gives back when we care for it properly."
