China Reaffirms Sovereignty Over Taiwan in Response to Japanese Comments
China has called on Japan to retract recent remarks about Taiwan and strictly adhere to the one-China principle, emphasizing that the island has been an inseparable part of Chinese territory since ancient times. The appeal came during a press conference on Wednesday, December 3, 2025, by Zhang Han, spokesperson for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office.
Zhang criticized Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s recent statements on Taiwan as “a serious interference in China’s internal affairs,” warning that such rhetoric risks emboldening separatist forces and destabilizing the Taiwan Strait. “The Japanese side must deeply reflect on its historical crimes and honor its political commitments with concrete actions,” Zhang stated.
The spokesperson highlighted 2025’s significance as the 80th anniversary of both the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and Taiwan’s restoration to China, alongside the 82nd anniversary of the Cairo Declaration. These milestones, Zhang noted, underscore international legal documents affirming China’s sovereignty over Taiwan. “Japan is obligated to comply with these principles under international law,” she added.
Zhang concluded by stressing that cross-strait unity remains paramount: “The future of Taiwan must be decided collectively by all Chinese people, including our compatriots in Taiwan.”
