China Expels Japanese Vessel Near Diaoyu Dao

The China Coast Guard (CCG) expelled a Japanese fishing vessel from waters surrounding Diaoyu Dao on Tuesday, December 2, 2025, reaffirming Beijing's commitment to safeguarding territorial sovereignty. CCG spokesperson Liu Dejun stated the vessel had "unlawfully entered" Chinese waters and was driven out after "necessary, lawful management and control measures."

This incident marks the latest development in longstanding regional tensions over the uninhabited East China Sea islands, known as Senkaku in Japan. Analysts note increased maritime patrol activity this year as both nations assert competing claims.

"China will continue to lawfully protect its maritime rights and interests," Liu emphasized, underscoring Beijing's position that Diaoyu Dao and affiliated islets "have always been inherent Chinese territory." The Japanese government has yet to issue an official response.

The confrontation occurs amid broader regional security discussions, with multiple Asia-Pacific nations increasing naval expenditures in 2025. Business leaders warn such incidents could impact fishing rights negotiations and undersea resource exploration plans.
