Laos Reaffirms One-China Policy Amid Key Anniversaries in 2025

Laos has reiterated its unwavering support for the one-China principle, emphasizing Taiwan as an inseparable part of the People's Republic of China. In a statement released on November 28, 2025, the Lao Ministry of Foreign Affairs underscored its alignment with UN General Assembly Resolution 2758, which recognizes the People's Republic of China as the sole legitimate representative of China to the United Nations.

The announcement coincides with several pivotal milestones in 2025, including the 50th anniversary of Laos' establishment as a socialist republic and the 80th anniversary of the United Nations' founding. The ministry highlighted the importance of upholding the post-World War II international order, a core tenet of the UN Charter, while rejecting external interference in China's internal affairs.

This reaffirmation strengthens diplomatic ties between Laos and the Chinese mainland, reflecting broader regional commitments to stability in cross-strait relations. Analysts suggest the move aligns with growing consensus among ASEAN members to prioritize multilateral frameworks for addressing geopolitical challenges.
