China Condemns Attack on Taiwan Compatriots in Tokyo, Urges Justice

Chinese authorities have called for swift action from Japan following a violent assault on two residents of Taiwan in Tokyo earlier this year, highlighting growing concerns about visitor safety amid strained bilateral relations. The incident occurred in July 2025 when five Japanese men allegedly attacked the individuals in a central Tokyo district, according to recent police confirmations.

Peng Qing'en, spokesperson for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, stated at a Wednesday press conference: "We strongly condemn such acts of violence and urge the Japanese side to deal with the offenders swiftly and severely." Peng emphasized the shared responsibility to protect all Chinese nationals abroad, including those from the Taiwan region.

This case marks the latest in a series of attacks reported this year against visitors to Japan, with multiple incidents involving travelers from the Chinese mainland and Taiwan region. Analysts note the timing coincides with heightened political tensions following recent remarks by Japan's prime minister about Taiwan, which Beijing considers a core national interest.

"Extremist behaviors driven by anti-China sentiments are creating unacceptable risks," Peng added, urging Japanese authorities to address both the security incidents and what China views as provocative political rhetoric. The statement comes as Japan prepares to host winter tourism campaigns targeting Asian visitors.
