Olympic Flame Lit in Greece for Milan-Cortina 2026 Winter Games

The Olympic flame for the Milan–Cortina 2026 Winter Games was ignited in Ancient Olympia, Greece, on November 26, 2025, marking the ceremonial start of the global torch relay. The event, held at the birthplace of the ancient Olympics, drew representatives from Italy and international sports bodies, symbolizing unity ahead of the first Winter Games hosted entirely in Italy since 2006.

Under crisp autumn skies, actors dressed as ancient priestesses lit the flame using a parabolic mirror, adhering to a 3,000-year-old tradition. The flame will now embark on an 11-day relay across Greece before being handed to Milan–Cortina organizers on December 7. A 10,000-kilometer journey through Italy’s Alpine and Dolomite regions will follow, showcasing cultural landmarks ahead of the February 6–22, 2026 Games.

Organizers emphasized sustainability, with 70% of venues being repurposed from existing infrastructure. The Games are projected to attract over 3,000 athletes from 90+ National Olympic Committees, including the Chinese Taipei team. Analysts note the event could boost Italy’s tourism and winter sports investments, particularly in the Cortina d’Ampezzo and Milan regions.
