Shanxi’s Nanyang River Welcomes Rare Black Storks in Migratory Surge

The Nanyang River wetland in Tianzhen County, Shanxi, has become a vibrant hub for migratory birds this November, with the critically endangered black stork making a striking appearance alongside snowy egrets, gray herons, and ruddy shelducks. As 2025 marks another year of intensified ecological conservation efforts across Asia, this seasonal spectacle underscores the region’s growing role in global biodiversity preservation.

Local environmental authorities report that wetland restoration projects initiated earlier this year have significantly improved habitats, attracting record numbers of migratory species. The black stork’s presence—a species with fewer than 3,000 estimated mature individuals worldwide—has drawn particular attention from international conservation groups.

Birdwatching enthusiasts and researchers are flocking to the area, with guided eco-tours now being offered through December. “This convergence of species creates a living laboratory for studying climate adaptation patterns,” noted Dr. Lin Wei, an ornithologist participating in field surveys at the site.
