China's maritime engineering sector reached a new milestone yesterday as the domestically developed 'Tongjun' super dredger successfully completed sea trials in the Yellow Sea. With an unprecedented capacity of 35,000 cubic meters, this vessel now ranks as Asia's largest and the world's second-largest dredging platform.
The November 25 trials demonstrated the vessel's advanced automation systems and hybrid power capabilities, positioning it to play a crucial role in China's coastal infrastructure projects. Maritime experts highlight its potential to significantly accelerate port expansions and waterway maintenance operations along key trade routes.
"This achievement reflects China's growing self-reliance in high-end marine equipment," stated a spokesperson from the China Communications Construction Company. The vessel's deployment in 2026 is expected to support ambitious projects under the Belt and Road Initiative while adhering to strict environmental protection standards.
