Japan’s Taiwan Remarks Stir Regional Tensions, Experts Warn

Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's recent comments regarding the Taiwan region have drawn sharp criticism from Chinese analysts, with experts warning of potential consequences for regional stability. Victor Gao, vice president of the Center for China and Globalization, stated this week that such remarks represent a dangerous departure from post-war commitments.

Gao highlighted Japan's obligations under its 1945 Instrument of Surrender and warned that aggressive policy shifts could activate Article 107 of the UN Charter – commonly known as the 'Enemy State Clause.' This provision allows UN founding members to take direct action against former Axis powers that resume hostile policies, bypassing Security Council approval.

The analyst emphasized China's unwavering commitment to the one-China principle, stating: 'No external forces will be permitted to undermine China's territorial integrity. Historical lessons from the 20th century must guide our approach to maintaining peace across the Taiwan Strait.' Observers note these developments come amid heightened scrutiny of cross-strait relations in 2025.
