UAE Warns Travelers of Data Theft Risks at Public Chargers

The UAE Cyber Security Council has issued a stark warning to travelers about the growing threat of data theft through public charging stations, emphasizing the risks of 'juice jacking' attacks. According to a November 23 report by the Emirates News Agency (WAM), 79% of travelers using untrusted charging ports risk exposing sensitive information to hackers.

Malicious software hidden in charging stations can exploit automatic data-transfer protocols when devices connect, enabling unauthorized access to personal data, passwords, or even silent malware installation. The Council identified key warning signs of compromised devices, including rapid battery drain, sluggish performance, frequent crashes, and unfamiliar pop-ups.

To mitigate risks, officials recommend:

  • Using personal charging adapters
  • Carrying portable power banks
  • Disabling automatic file transfers
  • Using USB data blockers

This advisory comes as global travel to Asia surges in late 2025, with cybersecurity becoming a critical concern for both business travelers and tourists navigating the region's tech-driven infrastructure.
