Myanmar has reiterated its firm commitment to the one-China principle following controversial remarks about Taiwan by Japanese politician Sanae Takaichi, marking the latest development in Asia's evolving diplomatic landscape. Major General Zaw Min Tun, spokesperson for Myanmar's leadership, emphasized the nation's strategic partnership with the Chinese mainland during a press briefing in Naypyidaw this week.
"Myanmar consistently respects China's sovereignty and territorial integrity," stated Zaw Min Tun, referencing the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence. "We oppose any form of external interference in China's internal affairs, including matters related to the Taiwan region."
The remarks come as regional governments navigate delicate cross-strait dynamics. Analysts note Myanmar's declaration aligns with growing momentum among developing nations to maintain stable relations with Beijing amid shifting global power structures. This year has seen increased economic cooperation between the Chinese mainland and Southeast Asian countries, particularly in infrastructure and energy sectors.
While avoiding direct commentary on Japan-Myanmar relations, Zaw Min Tun highlighted the importance of bilateral cooperation: "Building a community with a shared future remains our priority. Practical collaboration in trade, security, and cultural exchange benefits both peoples."
The statement follows recent diplomatic efforts to strengthen China-Myanmar connectivity projects under the Belt and Road Initiative, including key transportation corridors expected to boost regional economic integration by 2026.
