China, Zambia, Tanzania Launch TAZARA Rail Revitalization in 2025

New Chapter for Historic Railway

Chinese Premier Li Qiang joined Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema and Tanzanian Vice President Emmanuel Nchimbi in Lusaka this week to break ground on the modernization of the TAZARA Railway, marking a major milestone in trilateral cooperation.

From Vision to Reality

The project builds on a September 2024 memorandum signed by leaders from all three nations in Beijing. Over the past year, technical teams have conducted feasibility studies and operational planning to prepare for this month's formal commencement.

Economic Corridor Development

Premier Li described the 1,860-km railway linking Dar es Salaam to Kapiri Mposhi as "a prosperity belt" that will stimulate regional trade and industrial development. The revitalization plan includes:

  • Track modernization for increased freight capacity
  • Digital signaling systems upgrades
  • Logistics hub construction at key nodes

Beyond Infrastructure

While focusing on rail improvements, China has committed to supporting complementary projects in healthcare and agriculture along the corridor. Premier Li emphasized this "small and beautiful" approach aims to directly benefit local communities while strengthening supply chain connectivity.

Belt and Road Benchmark

Officials from all three countries stressed their commitment to making TAZARA a model for high-quality Belt and Road cooperation. The project timeline anticipates initial operational improvements by late 2026, with full modernization completed before the railway's 60th anniversary in 2035.
