Premier Li Urges Revitalization of Tanzania-Zambia Railway Ties

Chinese Premier Li Qiang has called for strengthened cooperation with Tanzania and Zambia to modernize the historic Tanzania-Zambia Railway (TAZARA), during high-level talks in Lusaka this week. The initiative aims to transform the 1,860-km infrastructure project into an economic corridor for regional development.

In discussions with Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema on Thursday, Premier Li emphasized the railway's symbolic importance as a landmark of China-Africa friendship. "This revitalization aligns with our shared aspirations for connectivity and prosperity," Li stated, proposing enhanced policy coordination and comprehensive development plans for areas along the route.

The Chinese premier outlined potential collaboration in mining, new energy vehicles, and artificial intelligence sectors, highlighting opportunities for technology transfer and sustainable industrial growth. His visit comes as bilateral trade between China and Zambia reached $9.8 billion in 2025, marking a 12% year-on-year increase.

First built between 1970-1975 through Chinese technical assistance, TAZARA remains a vital transport link for copper exports and regional trade. Modernization plans are expected to incorporate digital logistics systems and renewable energy solutions, positioning the railway as a key component of Africa's evolving transportation network.
